Many people want to have a furry companion who meets them at the door and can't wait to cuddle up. But some of us just don't have the time or the energy for training and long walks in the park. Solution? A cat.

We all agree kittens are adorable, but they need attention. Plan on spending some time playing, a little training and bonding with your kitten. This is also a great age to make them familiar with house rules -- like where their litter box is, and scratching the furniture is not allowed. A squirt bottle and a loud "No" should send a message when you catch them causing trouble.

If you are a person who needs their sleep, give serious consideration to an adult cat. Adults don't need quit as much attention as a kitten, but plan on some quality play and snuggle time as well as sharing your sleeping quarters. Many older cats are great loungers. A sunny spot on the carpet, some quality food for mature cats, a clean litter box, a daily scratch behind the ears and a bit of catnip is all they need.

So if you are thinking of a adding a cat to your home, check out your local shelter or rescue organization. There are always many cats available for adoption.
